Improving home insulation could save UK home owners over £3bn per year

A recent report by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has highlighted that if UK homes were better insulated, then home-owners would collectively save over £3bn a year on their energy bills.

Simply increasing EPC (energy performance certificates) ratings to a “C” would on average save each household over £200 a year, which is a significant saving – especially when we are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis.

The most affected are renters, as they are in the hands of their landlords who can’t always justify spending much on their rental properties due to rising costs and high interest rates for Buy-to-let mortgages. The rental market has more than doubled since 2001 so this problem is getting worse for many people who are choosing to rent rather than buy their home.

According to the Director of Policy and Advocacy at Which? – less than 15% of households have improved their home insulation in the last five years, which seems alarmingly low, especially when there have been so many schemes and incentives for people to improve home insulation, in recent times.
